Passerby Aggression Techniques in Local Government

Outdoor local government employees are highly visible while carrying out their everyday duties. Unfortunately, this visibility can make workers an easy target for unexpected comments, confrontation, or aggressive behaviour from members of the public. A routine task such as footpath repairs, waste collection, maintenance work, or a domestic visit can quickly become a challenging interaction.

Our Passerby Aggression Tools in Local Government Training gives outdoor workers practical strategies for responding to these situations calmly and professionally. Participants learn how to recognise escalating behaviour, avoid being drawn into unnecessary arguments, establish appropriate boundaries, and make safer decisions about when to respond, disengage, move away, or seek support. For teams exposed to more serious or recurring aggressive behaviour, our Dealing with Aggressive People Training Course provides additional strategies for managing aggression safely.

Course Description

Practical Strategies for Managing Passerby Aggression

Not every aggressive interaction requires the same response. Sometimes a short, professional response can help defuse tension. In other situations, ignoring a provocative comment or disengaging completely may be the safer and more effective option.

The course explores these different situations and helps employees make better decisions under pressure. Participants practise staying calm rather than responding reactively and learn how to avoid being pulled into “bait and battle” interactions where an individual may deliberately be attempting to provoke a response.

Employees who regularly encounter challenging members of the community may also benefit from our Dealing with Difficult People Training Course, which explores behavioural boundaries, staying composed, defusing tension, and responding rather than reacting.
